Holy crap, this was bad.

First of all, a giant mecha. Really? A giant mecha? My only guess is that they want to buy their way into the Gundam fans. And it’s not even an effective shape. Apart from this: “OMG, a big METAL thing, what shall we do?” ask the metalbender and the lavabender. Maybe open a pool of lava beneath that army, end of story? If only lava would melt anything in minutes…

We saw truly powerful benders fighting side by side and against Aang - have people forgotten bending, or what? Where are the master benders, like Bumi, Jeong Jeong, Master Pakku, Iroh?

The whole Legend of Korra is sad. It’s depressing, it’s turning a beautiful, strange, unique world inside out; giving us a realistic “show”. On top of this, Season 4 is predictable and boring.

Can I please have the real Avatar universe back?

RE: http://www.neurope.eu/article/say-ello-wave-goodbye

Fifty years ago, the future was going to be full of technology, it would make work simpler, mundane tasks around the home would be automated and there was serious talk of people working only two or three days a week, having their time freed up for the important things, friends, family, home life and so on.

That cannot be said better. Unfortunately, that was before the distopian sci-fi take over; after Gibson, things have changed.

Instead, technology has enslaved us. We work harder, longer for lower wages, pensions and benefits.

Truth again, but I’m experiencing this, I’ve heard this already. I would be very interested on ideas to get away from this, to solve this instead of pointing it out.

People aren’t designed for written communication […]

This is not entirely true. There are certain areas and times, when there is nothing wrong with written communication. IRC is a good example of this, but I would add, that knowing those people for real, as in having met them in person makes a big difference using these systems.

The real story of Ello, is not yet another silly idea, under-thought and over-funded, but that it might provoke us to look at how we live our lives and decide to switch off smart devices. It’s the smart thing to do.

It may very much be the smart thing to do, but it indicates more then this:

  • it indicates people are fed up not being able to use alter-egos online, that they always have to behave, to care about what they say and how they say it. It’s incredibly unhealthy that recruiters are able to look at Facebook profiles which was intended to be private, share with friends only.
  • it indicates that people want smaller communities, exclusive, invite-only communities. They do not want to be part of a faceless mass anymore but part of much, much smaller groups.
  • and it also indicates, that people would mindlessly jump on anything that looks different.

Altogether I believe the Ello-phenomenon is an early indicator that the internet is looking for it’s core, for it’s roots, to be free and a bit faceless, nameless again.

[…] and if anyone can get a version up that treats users with even slight respect, it could join the other internet greats, like Altavista or Psion.

And you just made my day by mentioning those two :)

Avatar - 3 books of The Legend of Aang vs 3 of The Legend of Korra

I’ve finished watching the season finale of Legend of Korra yesterday, and I still have this massively unrelieved feeling which never before happened to me.

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD. You’ve been warned.

I’ve finished watching the season finale of Legend of Korra yesterday, and I still have this massively unrelieved feeling which never before happened to me.

The story with Aang is going from a certain point to somewhere with a goal. All the characters gaining and loosing during the show, there are important moments describing the world and building background story, with lots of surprises during this time. Zuko is a brilliant character, so is her sister, Azula; Aang is learning a lot, we meet very unique and special people. Skills are not just appearing; they are results of logic, hard work, teachers, let them be humans, dragons, badgermoles. The final battle is probably the most intense battle scene I’ve ever seen ( including lots of animes ) and even if we have unanswered questions at the end, the series is complete in three seasons with huge lessons and a giant story.

Korra is focusing on the society aspects rather then a story from A to B, due to it’s nature of not having a setted table in the beginning. All the questions raised ( the Equalists, the origin Good and Bad, the original natural order ) are important questions but all of them are left opened, more importantly left unopposed. The Equalists questioned the benefits of the benders - not a single solution for the problem was proposed. When Korra “argues” with Zaheer about chaos, as the natural order, he tells a complete theory which for Korra replies practically nothing apart from a pathetic “but it’s wrong” type response. If a theory is raised, it should be at least opposed, but not left opened, because it will leave the feeling it’s true and that it is the way. My other big issue is that skills are just coming out of nowhere. At the end of season one, suddenly, within a few minutes, Korra can repair bending powers out of thin air. At the end of season three, Boulin can lavabend without any former indication or thought about this. Lavabending, for gods sake, the whole lava-bending is an “eeer…no”, since even Avatar Roku, a full fledged, all-four-elements master was only able to do it properly in the Avatar state, during the Winter Solstice. Eh.

Compared to the months Compared to what Zuko needed to succeed in redirecting the lightning (which he was thought by the one who watched and learned from the ways of waterbending), this is like the D&D levelling up in the middle of a battle. Korra can metalbend for her first try even though she seems to be pretty far from the earthbending skills Toph had when she unlocked them.

Legend of Korra is also incredibly dark and depressing compared to the Aang series. Some of the prison gear, the way P’li dies, the thing that people actually die by protagonist hands (!)… I know, times change, and I’m not against being a bit more realistic or intense but do we really need this in Avatar? Especially after what Aang tried to teach the world: there is always another way.

I will not say Aang was superior in all aspects, but Korra, in my opinion, will need to find a final target, a goal, where things are going to. It will need to state answers or at least arguments against brilliant but disturbing questions and and it will need to prepare the skill-gaining of the characters much, much better.

Do not leave us with a sad, empty and “there is something wrong” feeling at the end of a season. Even a cliffhanger is better.

UPDATE

This has been brought to my attention lately; and they have a really good point. Korra may never had walked the same path as Aang, rather one like Akira, Elfen Lied of Rahxephon did.

UPDATE 2

I came across a review and speculation on where the Korra series is headed to; this is a good writing, putting my concerns into words much better I could ever done it.

http://comicsalliance.com/legend-of-korra-review-finale-spoilers/

UPDATE 3

I re-watched ATLA with my wife, and I will say the original series is superior and is miles ahead of Legend of Korra in all possible way. Especially with the depth of the characters and with the taught lessons. Just watch “Tales of Ba Sing Se” again if you have any doubts. Some said that this is due to the lack of time: the Books of Korra have 13 episodes, while Aang had 20; true, but Aang had 3 books while Korra is 4. Do the math.

Game of Thrones is crippled

During the past week, on every single news site I regularly visit, I’ve come across George R. R. Martin’s fundraising offer: $20000 and you can die in his books1.

The cause is good ( the money is for a wolf sanctuary ), and there are other options to support, all of them would be fine except the highest prize.

I was a fairly early reader of the original Game of Thrones book and it was something new, something no one did properly before: a fantasy with very life-like happenings and twist. I’ve later learned that the original first book was such a massive success that Martin altered his plans to continue the story five years later with book 2 and 3 for the trilogy; instead he started writing 7 books, filling in all time. That is how the fascinatingly boring A Feast for Crows and nothing-is-actually-happening A Dance with Dragons born.

And now, his offering to alter the storyline that was supposed to be the original trilogy. The story that he said he’d written parts of a decade earlier, according to his words.

Most of the best books I’ve read are stories that were a whole ( more or less ) before they were written; or at least this was what their writers told about them. ( Just search for the reasons why only 7 Narnia books exist, for example. ) They offer the possibility that Star Wars did: a long, long time ago…

But not Martin. This move is clearly ruining the last remains that The Song of Ice and Fire was ever a complete story, with a beginning and an end, that was waiting to be told. No, it’s something Martin decides.

It would have been nice to have the illusion.

For the very first time in my life I think I’m starting to understand why one just wants a computer which “just works”: I’m looking for a car, which “just works”.

I know I’m a strange male, but I don’t like cars. There’s no particular type, not even preferred company, but I do want reliability and long lifetime. Also my only reason for having a car is to be able to visit places and locations impossible otherwise, and this is where hiring is failing due to opening times.

Anyway, I think I have bit more tolerance now that I see how frustrating can it be when something’s eating away a significant amount time and you don’t even enjoy it.

Remake, Reboot, reshit… OK, the sci-fi masterpieces cannot be made to a good movie ( The Foundation for example would take a whole season of movies at least ). But. No trilogy from the Weaverworld of Clive Barker? It has horror, urban fantasy, philosophy, what else do you need? There are so many stories never been made to the screens yet, just stop the bloody remakes/reboots, please.
